The second is minimum cover, where there isn’t enough fill depth above the pipe to satisfy structural backfill requirements for a round shape. Round pipe relies on side support from compacted structural backfill up to its springline; when site grading won’t allow that buildup, a lower-profile shape becomes the more practical answer. Arch and elliptical pipes both solve this problem in similar ways, since each offers a vertical height that’s less than that of a hydraulically equivalent circular pipe of the same capacity.

When to Choose Reinforced Arch Pipe Over Round RCP
Specify arch pipe when site geometry, not hydraulics, is the limiting factor.
Round pipe remains the right default for most drainage applications. It’s simpler to install, widely stocked, and well understood by every contractor crew in Texas. Arch pipe earns its place specifically when one of these conditions applies:
Minimum cover requirements can’t be met with a round pipe of the needed capacity, often in shallow parking lot drainage, retrofit projects, or sites with high water tables limiting excavation depth
Existing utilities cross the alignment at a depth that leaves no room for a taller round section
The project is replacing an open ditch or channel with a closed system, and the shallow profile of arch pipe makes better use of the available right-of-way and grade
Roadway or structure clearance above the pipe crown is fixed by an existing bridge deck, railroad embankment, or other structure that can’t be raised
If none of those conditions apply, round pipe is almost always the more economical and straightforward choice. Arch pipe is a clearance solution, not a default upgrade.
Joint Types Available for Reinforced Arch Pipe
Once the size is settled, the joint type is the next decision to make, and it depends on the application. Our arch pipe is produced with tongue-and-groove joints, which can be sealed with preformed mastic or butyl gasket material, or with single offset joints designed to accept a rubber gasket.
The choice between them comes down to what the line needs to do. Tongue-and-groove joints with mastic sealant are a common, cost-effective choice for storm drainage and culvert applications where some soil moisture infiltration is an acceptable design tolerance. Single offset joints with rubber gaskets, manufactured to meet ASTM C443, provide a tighter seal and are the better choice when the application calls for more consistent watertightness, such as sanitary-adjacent storm systems or sites with a high water table where infiltration could undermine the surrounding bedding over time.
